Shohei Ohtani Throws Complete-Game Shutout, Follows Up With 2 HRs in Angels’ Doubleheader

At this point, it’s almost comical. One day after the Angels took Shohei Ohtani off the trade market, the two-way superstar had himself a day in a doubleheader against Detroit. Ohtani tossed a complete-game shutout where he allowed just one hit in the Angels’ 6-0 win over the Tigers in Game 1. In the nightcap, he smashed two homers in an 11-4 victory. Ohtani’s twin bill might rank top-10 of the greatest days ever by a baseball player. He’s the first player in 52 years to throw a shutout and hit two homers in the same day (Sonny Siebert, 1971). Ohtani now has 38 home runs on the season, leading Matt Olson (32), Pete Alonso (28), and Luis Robert (28). He also ranks fourth among pitchers in strikeouts (156). What can’t this man do?

Ohtani’s Doubleheader Masterpiece

Game 1 (Pitching): 9 IP, 8 Ks, 1 Hit, 0 Runs

Game 2 (Batting): 2-for-3, 2 HRs, 3 RBIs

The Angels are just four games back of the AL Wild Card. They’ve won four straight and they’re tied for the best record in baseball since the all-star break.
